Deckhand salaries vary depending on the vessel type and location. On average, in the NY/NJ ports region, deckhands start make $55,000 annually and receive medical/dental benefits.

How long is training?

Training is hands on and can be day to day or a full immersive overnight schedule. Depending on the type of sessions offered (day to day, or overnight), training can be anywhere from 7 - 14 days.

When will training be offered?

The VMS Foundation is seeking to support potential trainees as soon as possible. The amount of trainees per session/class is important and schedules are built on demand. Additionally, since training is hands on, we're also limited to the amount of trainees each session/class due to vessel capacity.

Absolutely! Entry level opportunities like being a Deckhand will provide on the job experience and accessibility for you to decide what other roles you'd like to explore. Higher level positions require additional training and/or study and maritime employers want to support you in your career growth.

Are there any requirements for the training provided in partnership with VMS Foundation?

Yes. Alongside identifying with a marginalized group as our mission is to support the historically underrepresented, you must be ages 18-26, have a High School Diploma/GED, hold U.S. Citizenship, have NO criminal background and be able to pass periodic drug screening.
