How is Elm Charter different from public schools?

Our school is run by a board composed of educators, parents, and community members that are from the neighborhood. As a community-based school, we believe that this model keeps us rooted in the community and allows us to make changes according to student need, rather than city need.

What are the school hours?

The school hours are 7:15 am for breakfast, and 7:45 am- 3:30 pm for instruction. If your child takes the bus service in the morning, they arrive at the school at 7:15 am. Wednesdays, we have a short day: 7:15 am - 12:00 pm.

Is Elm Community Charter School tuition free?

Yes, it is a public school.  We offer the same services as a public school.  Attending our school is free!

Question 4

Does Elm offer an After School Program?

Yes.  We currently offer after school five days a week until 6:00PM, Wednesdays until 4:00PM. The After School Program is free of charge. Bus Service is not offered past 3PM and students must get picked up from the school if they are enrolled in our after school program.

When will I know if I qualify for school bus transportation service?

Once your child is registered your home information is shared with the NYC Office of Pupil Transportation.  Student eligibility is based on distance in route from home address to the school location. Generally, if you live within 5 miles of the school, you qualify for bussing.

Is there a school uniform?

No, there is no school uniform.  One of Elm's core values is Creativity. We believe learners should be able to express themselves and many times it is through their choice of clothing.
