Join Dr. Brian Van Brunt for this live, online certification course addressing violence risk and threat assessment in workplaces, schools, colleges, and universities. This course will cover all aspects of threat assessment, including intake and interviewing skills, assessing written threats, and developing risk mitigation plans.

This course will provide a review of foundational concepts in violence risk and threat assessment, practical guidance on interviewing skills to gather information from the person being assessed, and direction on how to write a report that provides useful and accessible guidance to the referral source.

The class will be recorded and made available for those who are unable to attend a session due to scheduling conflicts. Attendees will receive access to the Pathways Triage and Darkfox Violence Risk and Threat Assessment systems through January 2027. Group rates are available. Email bethany@dprep.com questions.

The class will use case studies to teach core concepts and allow time for interactive discussion and reflection. These case studies will address universal threat assessment concepts and will be drawn from workplace and college settings. Supplemental resources, including research articles, checklists, informational one-sheets, discussion questions, and training exercises, will be provided.

During his career, Dr. Van Brunt has authored over a dozen books on the topic of violence risk and threat assessment and has been an invited plenary speaker to the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals (ATAP) and the Canadian Association of Threat Assessment Professionals CATAP). Brian was a major contributing author of the NABITA Risk Rubric and the creator of the SIVRA-35 Assessment Tool, the Violence Risk Assessment of the Written Word (VRAWW), the Non-Clinical Assessment of Suicide Tool (NAS), the Incel Indoctrination Rubric (IIR), and the Extremist Risk Intervention Scale (ERIS). Along with Bethany Smith, he has developed the Pathways Triage System and the DarkFox Violence Risk and Threat Assessment System, which is also currently licensed to ICS as a tool for making Title IX interim separation decisions.

What others have said about this course:

"This is day one of what I hope is a great training. The information has been valuable and done in a way that those of us who are not clinicians can participate."

"Learning about the difference between VRA and Threat Assessment through case studies was new to me."

"This training is an eye-opening experience. I am taking this course to expand and improve my understanding of violence and risk assessments. I still need to learn so much, but I feel this course has shed some light and is a step in the right direction."

"I took this course intending to develop guidelines for conducting a workplace violence and threat assessment. However, this session makes me feel that I need to encourage managers and supervisors to take an awareness training to learn how to engage or spot threats within their department. I feel that some may not have the tools or understanding to identify threats or if they do would not act on it."

"The material is great, and the scenarios and discussions provoke good conversations on the actions leading to the events."

"Great overall impression. I really enjoyed the real-world examples and videos and the upfront nature of the discussion. I also appreciated that the humanity of everyone involved was mentioned."
