Description:

Learn how to build stronger family bonds across generations. Isabel uses her experience as a “retired grandchild”, parent, and senior care professional to offer a framework for helping children develop more meaningful relationships and understanding with their older loved ones. Learn how older adults and grandparents can play a role in helping neurotypical and neurodivergent children gain confidence and resiliency for life circumstances.


Learning Objectives:

1. Discuss challenges of intergenerational connection

2. Share benefits of intergenerational connection

3. Present framework to promote stronger bonds.

4. Brainstorm ways to help kids realize their impact

5. Brainstorm ways to answer kids’ questions

6. Explain how this framework can be helpful with neurodiverse children/adolescence.

7. Learn strategies that can be used to prompt children through interaction


Our Presenter:

Isabel Tom is the author of The Value of Wrinkles: A Young Perspective on How Loving the Old will Change Your Life. She is also a mom, wife, daughter, and retired granddaughter. Isabel has been featured on national television as well on numerous radio shows and podcasts such as Building Relationships with Dr. Gary Chapman and AARP’s Take on Today. Isabel is Chinese American, grew up in a multigenerational household, and took part in caring for her grandparents, who lived to 98 and 102, and her father, who battled cancer and passed in 2015. Professionally, Isabel has served in the senior living and hospice care field. Isabel holds a Master of Public Health from the University of Maryland.
