'Verdi, Wagner & Puccini: The Grand Masters of 19th Century Opera' Webinar
Overview
"...when a thing isn’t worth saying, you sing it." -Pierre Beaumarchais, The Barber of Seville, 1773
The world of opera has been full of remarkable contributors; great game changers who left the operatic stage in a completely different place from the one they found. In the 19th century, three such men revolutionzed the art form in three very different ways: Giuseppe Verdi, Richard Wagner, and Giacomo Puccini. What made these master composers so unique, and what special ability did they all share? It's time to delve into their extraordinary contributions to the art of opera and discover how they forever revolutionized music drama.
Join New York Adventure Club as we explore the musical beauty, brilliance, and legacy of Giuseppe Verdi, Richard Wagner, and Giacomo Puccini; a triumvirate of musical genius who transformed the art of opera originally developed by Claudio Monteverdi in the early 1600s.
Led by music historian Jamie Hayes, our unique virtual experience surrounding the world of 19th century opera will include:
- The life journeys of these three very different visionaries who embraced their predecessors' legacy and forever changed the operatic landscape through their music, words, stories, and fabulous life stories
- A deep dive into the great operas of Verdi, including La Traviata, Rigoletto, and Falstaff
- A discussion surrounding Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring Cycle), an extraordinary 15-hour storytelling feat that took 26 years to complete
- The warmth and romance of Puccini as we explore La Boheme, Madama Butterfly, and Tosca
- Musical examples and excerpts from opera productions around the world
Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Jamie — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!

Testimonials
"Absolutely everything! The presenter conductor was just superb. He’s an excellent teacher, I loved the back stories and the history of the composers he shared, how they made history in their own rights in the opera, and his explanations musically, as well as the stories the offers were built on, how they belong to their era historically as well. Great clips!" -Guest
