Variety Pack's Workshop Series: Know Your Anthem w/ J.B. Stone

Having navigated both the spheres of the Spoken Word and Written word, J.B. has cultivated that experience into being one helluva seasoned teaching artist to boot, and has a whole well of knowledge to drink from, so come on down, Thursday evening, August 28th, and you won't even need to leave the comfort of your home because we will be doing all of this via Zoom! 6PM EST, 5PM CST, 3PM PST, and for our wonderful international friends and fam, feel free to chime in whenever our times may match up!

Throughout this workshop we'll look through various prompts and examples in one of the most vital searches for any aspiring writer: exploring their own voice. What flaws define you? What strengths define you? You may have a story that is only yours to tell, but how are you gonna tell it? What's your personal fight song? Your poem of defiance? What side are you willing to share on that page? Realistically this is a journey that cannot be encompassed in one solitary workshop, but every journey well traveled comes with baby steps.

Even seasoned poets like myself can use a little refresher on what the ideals of a good anthem poem are, and even our journeys come with little reminders! So yes this opened to poets of all stages and sages! Let's get into this!

We're a magazine that has so far managed to continue despite our expenses being out-of-pocket, but right now as we are seeking opps out there, we are without grant funding, insitutional backing, nor corporate sponsorship, so right now proceeds from this workshop will go directly into the Variety Pack's operating costs and hopefully our next issue in the fall!

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR:

J.B. Stone (he/they) is a Neurodivergent/Autistic spoken word poet, playwright, teaching artist, writer, critic, and editor from Brooklyn, now residing in Buffalo, NY. They’re the author of three chapbooks including, Fireflies and Hand Grenades (Bottlecap Press 2022). J.B.'s also the founding EIC at Variety Pack, and a flash fiction reader for Split Lip Magazine. His fiction, poems, and has appeared in Blue Earth Review, Los Angeles Review, Button Poetry, Rain Taxi, Chicago Review of Books, The McNeese Review, Hawaii Pacific Review, Peach Mag, The Buffalo News, Buffalo Spree, JMWW, among other spaces. Along with their various publications and editorial positions, J.B. has won, competed and placed in various Poetry Slams across the U.S. & Canada.
