Great! But in real life, what is The Vanguard?

The Vanguard is a group of people who get together in a restaurant to play D&D once a month.

Question 3

Do I have to know anything about D&D to join in the fun?

Accepted Answer

Not at all! We have long-time players who will sit with you to make sure you pick up the game quickly and have fun playing.

Do I have to make a commitment to come every month?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely not. We encourage everyone who loves the atmosphere to attend as many times as they can but you can come as many times as you want with no obligation.

Question 5

You said it's at a restaurant? Will there be drinks & food?

Accepted Answer

Yes! Come eat and drink while you play! Space is limited so we suggest eating at the restaurant beforehand but plenty of players snack as they defend the world from evil! The restaurant has a wonderful staff that waits on you as you play providing a fun experience before, during and after.

Ok I can drink, eat and play D&D - what do I bring?

Yourself! You don't need anything to start playing. We provide dice, character sheets, pencils/pens and all the basics for you to show up, drink in hand, and play at zero cost. If you're an experienced player bring your best dice, character sheet, and minifigure to show off during your adventures.

Can I make my character up beforehand and bring a pre-made sheet? What are the limitations?

Absolutely! Create a 3rd level character of your choice. This character will start with 100G and should not have any feats. We use 5th edition Basic Rule set.

Does it have to be a character sheet or can I use digital tools like D&D Beyond?

Accepted Answer

We absolutely encourage the use of whatever digital tool platform makes you comfortable or use the tried and true paper and pencil.

Question 9

Will I always be the same level?

Accepted Answer

No, you will level up as you attend more sessions! The more you come, the more powerful you'll be.

You mind sharing the breakdown for me?

Accepted Answer

Of course not! Session 1-3: Level 3. Session 4-6: Level 4. Session 7-9: Level 5. Session 10-12: Level 6. Session 13-15: Level 7. Session 16-18: Level 8. Session 19-21: Level 9. Session 22-24: Level 10. Session 25-27: Level 11. Session 28-30: Level 12. ...and so on and so forth until level 20.

How long does the game last?

Each adventure is roughly 2 and half to 3 hours long. We try not to play longer than that as people love to have a drink after and talk about their experience.

How many adventurers do I play with in a game?

Accepted Answer

Usually we count the number of people at the start and divide up your adventuring parties into 3-6 people. It all depends on how many people show up and how many Dungeon Masters are available. We always make it work!

What is a Dungeon Master?

They are the person that is the story teller and referee of your adventure. They explain the world around you, arbitrate rules and generally try to simultaneously make your experience awesome and try to kill you.

Can I be a Dungeon Master?

Sure! We're always looking for people who would like to fill that role full-time or part-time. Just inquire when you show up.

Question 15

Alright! I'm in. I'll go on an adventure but next month will I just continue on the same adventure?

Accepted Answer

Nope! You'll experience a different adventure every game. That way of playing D&D is called a one-shot. It's a quick story that has excitement, adventure and battles every time. They last only a few hours and can be played by different adventurers.

Sounds exciting but I do love a good plotline. Is everyone's story different?

Accepted Answer

While every table's adventure may be different, they are all part of the same storyline. Each adventure brings new information back to the guild. If you help, you can contribute to uncover the over-arching plotline and villains behind some of the mysteries that surround your particular quests.

Do I need to contribute to understand what's going on?

While we encourage every player to recall the tales of their adventure, we have guides and resources to reveal the storylines for you.

Sounds like you guys have thought of everything! Why don't you charge anything?

Accepted Answer

We love D&D and sharing the game with those who enjoy playing or have never played. We also love supporting local business and the restaurant is kind enough to lend us the space and service so we try to give back by buying food and drink to show our support to them!

Question 19

Is there an age limit as to who can join?

Accepted Answer

Kind of yeah. We can't have unaccompanied minors (under the age of 18) wandering the taverns. If you're under the age of 18 and bring a parent you're welcome to join. Adventurers under the age of 13 may have a little trouble grasping the rules and slow gameplay down.
