Mike is an Owner and Design Director as Trade Design Build, where he coordinates and oversees all design projects. As an experienced Architect, he brings clarity to the design process, and is passionate about developing unique design concepts, tailored to the vision, and specific needs of our varied clients.

KIMBERLY VAN LEEUWEN, OWNER | VICE PRESIDENT, DIRECTOR OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

Kimberly (Kim) Van Leeuwen, RLA, LEED AP, is the Director of Landscape Architecture at Fisher Associates. Kimberly’s leadership spans all facets of the firm’s practice. Her passion is to develop spaces that are sustainable, integrated into the natural world and mindful of the human-environment relationship. Her collaborative nature and keen organizational skills lead clients to seek her out for their most complex, high-profile projects.   A recognized leader in her field, Kim has played a pivotal role in the firm’s groundbreaking green roof projects, porous pavement installations, and LEED-certified initiatives. Her work has been featured by the Sustainable Sites Initiative and published in the Journal of Green Building. She is a member of the national exam writing committee for licensure of landscape architects and is registered to practice in multiple states.

Session 1 | 6:00p - 7:00p (1.0 AIA HSW LU)

During this session attendees will be taken on a guided tour house and landscape tour of the Van Leeuwen net-zero house and grounds.  During the tour Kimberly Van Leeuwen, Owner and Landscape Architect at Fisher Associates will discuss her vision and goals for the design of her new-zero house and landscape.  Kim will also explain the design and landscape strategies that both support human health and the surround natural ecosystem.  Architect Michael Barnoski of Trade Design will describe the passive heating, cooling and natural daylighting design strategies utilized to achieve net-zero energy usage.  Michael will also discuss as well as lessons learned and how design compares to current operations.  Lastly, Michael will discuss the carbon neutral / positive building products/systems integrated into the design as well as lessons learned.

  1. Describe the site strategies utilized to create outdoor living spaces that are connected to nature and support human health and wellbeing.
  2. Discuss the site design strategies utilized to support and enhance the property’s natural landscape ecosystem.
