Spend Valentine’s evening immersed in romance, swing, and world-class jazz as Matt DeChamplain & Atla DeChamplain bring their celebrated quartet to The River Room for a special one-night performance.

Husband-and-wife collaborators Matt and Atla DeChamplain are among the most compelling jazz artists to emerge from New England in recent decades. Their music blends deep respect for the Great American Songbook with original compositions, expressive improvisation, and an unmistakable sense of joy and intimacy—perfectly suited for a Valentine’s celebration.

Pianist Matt DeChamplain is known for his virtuosic touch and rich command of jazz tradition, seamlessly weaving stride, swing, bebop, and blues into a modern voice. A Hartt School faculty member and alumnus of the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz, Matt has performed at premier venues and festivals including the Monterey Jazz Festival, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center, and has collaborated with legends such as Jon Hendricks, Nat Reeves, Steve Davis, and José Feliciano.

Vocalist Atla DeChamplain brings a captivating presence and profound musicality to the stage. Renowned for her mastery of vocalese, Atla is celebrated for her original lyrics, expressive phrasing, and deeply sincere interpretations. A protégé of the late Jon Hendricks, she has performed with many of jazz’s great voices and instrumentalists, and her sound draws from jazz, blues, gospel, and R&B traditions. In addition to her performing career, Atla is a dedicated educator and Associate Professor of Amplified Voice at the University of Rhode Island.

Together, the DeChamps’ performances are heartfelt, swinging, and conversational—music that breathes, listens, and connects. This Valentine’s Day concert promises lush ballads, playful rhythms, and moments of breathtaking intimacy in The River Room’s warm, listening-room setting.
