SUMMARY
Part IV: Compassion Fatigue and the Cost of Caring for Mental Health Professionals
This presentation will focus on assisting social service and other treatment professionals to better understand the sources and symptoms of burnout and vicarious trauma on employee and organizational health. The first half of the program will focus on compassion fatigue education. This will include discussions of compassion fatigue basics, a look at the sources and long-term implications of organizational trauma, how to assess organization health and management strategies for maximizing organizational wellness. The second half of the training will provide an opportunity for attendees to work together to create strategies for addressing compassion fatigue in their specific work setting. It is hoped that each participant will leave with a plan for combating compassion fatigue and improving staff satisfaction and organizational health.
OBJECTIVES:
- Participants will be able to identify the sources of burnout and vicarious trauma in their specific work environments.
- Participants will be able to define burnout and secondary trauma and to describe the relationship between burnout and secondary trauma in the experience of Compassion Fatigue.
- Participants will be able implement management strategies for minimizing burnout, vicarious trauma, and organizational trauma.
- Participants will be able to define and assess for organizational trauma within their own work environment.
- Participants will develop a plan for addressing compassion fatigue and organizational trauma in their specific work environment.
Trainer Bio:
Dr. Michael Barnes is a Master Addiction Counselor, Licensed Professional Counselor, and Diplomate in the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress. He serves as the Chief Clinical Officer at the Foundry Treatment Center in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. He provides administrative and clinical oversight for all residential and outpatient programs. Dr. Barnes comes to the Foundry after serving for five years as the Clinical Manager of Residential Services at CeDAR (Center for Dependency, Addiction, and Rehabilitation) at the University of Colorado Hospital and 10 years as a full-time clinical professor in Counseling. Most recently he served as the Clinical Coordinator and Clinical Assistant Professor in the MA Program in Counseling at the University of Colorado Denver. Dr. Barnes has developed trauma integrated clinical models for the treatment of individuals with co-occurring addiction and trauma and he speaks nationally on Families, Trauma, and Addiction. Dr. Barnes received his BA in Psychology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, his M.Ed. in Rehabilitation Counseling from the University of Pittsburgh, and his Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Florida State University.

RVAAM selected curriculum has been approved for specific professions (e.g. social work, law enforcement, corrections, probation/parole) Upon completion of an online evaluation form, participants are welcome to request a Certificate of Training; Social Work Category I Continuing Education Units (CEUs), and/or academic credits. All participants are eligible to receive a Certificate of Training (1 credit per training hour).
In order to receive a Certificate of Training, participants video cameras must remain on during all V-STEP Webinar trainings.
