V-Step Training: Intimate Partner Violence, Lethality and Safety for All by Dave Thomas

This is a new 2.5 hour training that aims to examine the connection intimate partner violence and the danger of the offenders on all.

TITLE: INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE, LETHALITY AND SAFETY FOR ALL

DATE and TIME:

Tuesday December 9, 2025 ~ 9:00 AM - 11:30 AM EST

SUMMARY:

This training takes an in-depth look at the nexus between intimate partner violence (domestic violence, stalking, sexual assault, strangulation, dating violence) and the danger these offenders are to not only their significant others, but to third parties, and to law enforcement. A look at the research indicates that this category of offender is implicated in the majority of our mass shootings, an extremely high percentage of law enforcement officers feloniously murdered by firearm every year, and those committing violence against our children and the elderly. Intimate partner violence calls remain some of the deadliest calls facing today’s law enforcement officers. This training provides a brief history and understanding of the issues. Discusses lessons learned through working with law enforcement leaders and training experts and provides a roadmap of what to look for and what to listen for in order to make the law keep its promise.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Strengthen the capacity to recognize potential for lethality in intimate partner relationships.
  • Make community stakeholders aware of the multiple individuals in danger of being injured and/or killed when individuals engage in certain behaviors.
  • Discuss strategies for mitigating the danger to victims as well as third parties in instances in which there is elevated potential for lethality.
