Supporting all learners to reach high levels of math understanding begins with understanding where students are along a learning progression, then building on what they already know to move toward new learning. This workshop will explore strategies for using Indiana’s Mathematics Performance Level Descriptors (PLDs) in K–5 classrooms to identify the strengths students bring and determine the next steps for growth in understanding.
Rather than emphasizing gaps or deficits in math, we will focus on how progressions help us recognize and build on what students can already do to guide them toward more complex skills and deeper understanding. We will shift our mindset from identifying what students don’t know to highlighting the math skills they do have. Together, we’ll explore the skills outlined in Indiana’s Mathematics PLDs to consider the full range of knowledge and strengths students need to demonstrate mastery of a skill. We’ll then examine how to use what students already know as meaningful entry points for instruction. By anchoring instruction in what students demonstrate within the PLDs, we can more effectively support their movement to the next level of proficiency in mathematics.
Every child has mathematical strengths and valuable mathematics knowledge that serve as a foundation for new learning. Instead of focusing on what students “can’t do yet,” we will center our thinking on what students already know how to do—and identify the next step to help them grow.
