Using Buddhist Psychology in Clinical Practice

with Doug Baker, LICSW, IMP Board President

Buddhist teachings, or Dharma, offer a profound theory of mind and human psychology. This workshop series will explore core Dharma frameworks and their practical applications in clinical settings—often without directly using terms like “mindfulness,” “meditation,” or “Buddhist.”

We’ll also examine how Buddhist psychology intersects with Western therapeutic approaches, including:

✅ CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy)

✅ ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy)

✅ IFS (Internal Family Systems)

✅ Freudian & Psychodynamic perspectives

“Mindfulness and Buddhist Psychology: The Opposable Thumb meets the Swiss Army Knife”

This workshop will explore how mindfulness empowers the practitioner to use the suite of dharma frameworks to come to their own aid amidst distress, cultivate resilience and experience well-being. We will examine some of the core psychological principles of the Buddhist teachings and how to apply them in clinical practice. There will be time to explore specific clinical presentations and apply the teachings, along with a brief practice experience.
