A virtual studio visit and talk by David Březina & Anna Štepanovská
At Rosetta, we spend most of our time designing multilingual fonts, which can get pretty tedious. Together with admin and foundry management, it gets monotonous or even dull. We wanted to bring some of our creative spark back. so we have developed a few self-initiated projects. Some of them are speculative. Some of them have useless features. Others are absolutely useless. We call them useless fonts and thought you might want to see them.
We consider clients to make our work useful and make a living. We try to anticipate trends or win accolades from our peers. When left unchecked, the considerations become stifling. But what will happen if we choose to design all the fonts that we once deemed useless?
David Březina is the managing director at Rosetta. While you may know him as the designer of the award-winning type family Skolar, he has also worked on custom typefaces for Adobe, Linotype (Monotype), Microsoft, Google, and others. So far, he has designed typefaces for Cyrillic, Greek, Gujarati, Devanagari, and various extensions of Latin. David holds a Master’s degree in computer science from Masaryk University in Brno (Czechia) and an MA in Typeface Design and PhD from the University of Reading (UK). His cross-disciplinary PhD thesis studied visual similarity and coherence of characters in typefaces for continuous reading in Latin, Cyrillic, and Devanagari scripts. He has also been actively involved in writing, presenting, and conducting workshops on type and typography around the world.
Anna Štepanovská is a type and graphic designer. After graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań, she established herself in Brno’s vibrant design scene. At Rosetta, she works on custom and retail fonts, marketing, and has played a key role in the company’s development since its early days. From 2011 to 2013, she was a co-organizer of the international TypeTalks conferences and TypeShorts meetings. Her work style combines traditional craftsmanship (calligraphy), artistic sensitivity (painting), and meticulous precision (digital fonts).
