About this event

Learn about 16 plants you can use to prevent, treat, and manage skin ailments and or conditions. We'll profile each plant including how they look and which parts of the plants typically used, their geography, their function, and the various different ways they can be prepared.

Some preparations include: tinctures, oxymeals, decoctions, infusions, glycerites, vinegars, herbal honeys, electuaries, ointments and salves, butters and ghees, infused oils, herbal sweets, baths, liniments, poultices, and compressions.

We'll also talk about dosages, medicinal interactions, and getting creative with how you can make your own herbal product!

Some plants we'll profile include: Agrimony, Burdock, Comfrey, Dandelion, Wood Betony, and St. John's Wort.

Attendees will receive a herbal salve gift!

Norbaya Jameela Durr has been a community organizer for 20+ years and holds a BSc in biology and English, and a minor in chemistry. She is a 2-year Fulbright Program English Teaching Assistant that was placed in Maun, Botswana where she taught the English language, and also ran several skills and experiential learning programs including bibliotherapy and The Writing Program to enhance literacy and emotional wellbeing. She also developed and ran programs including sports, arts, games, drama, and play writing. She is educated in Herbalism and uses a combination of her education and experiences of working in global communities to support greater education and quality of life for individuals using herbs, art, and the literary arts. She is currently accepted to the Plant Biology Graduate Group PhD program at UC Davis, where she will further study the molecular underpinnings within plant-microbe interactions impacted by pollution. She is also a 20+ year member and an 8-year Board of Director at the non-profit Inner-city Muslim Action Network where their mission is foster health, wellness and healing in the inner-city.

After spending 2-years living in Maun, Botswana and traveling and discovering life across African countries including Senegal, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, South Africa, and Mozambique, she has broaden her understanding of human culture and society, and focuses her literary pursuits in connecting Americans to African cultures and their rich histories and traditions.
