On December 11, 2018, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of the Army (Army) signed a proposed rule revising the definition of “waters of the United States” that clarifies federal authority under the Clean Water Act.

As part of our ongoing outreach to state officials on this proposed revised definition of “waters of the United States,” the EPA and Army are hosting discussion sessions with state officials during the public review process. The focus of the discussion sessions will be to hear your state’s input on the proposed new definition and discuss implementation considerations. Your input during this process is important to our agencies.

At this time, the agencies plan a meeting with states on the morning of April 3, 2019, in Seattle, WA. More information will follow in a confirmation email.

The agencies have three primary purposes: to present the proposed revised definition of “waters of the United States” and address clarifying questions from co-regulators; to hear initial feedback on the proposal from co-regulators; and to allow robust discussion of implementation considerations and the potential for mapping "waters of the United States."
