About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours 30 minutes

When Jennifer Celeste Briggs' daughter Sarah was diagnosed with autism, she tried a range of techniques to help. Nothing was working. Then she decided to adapt a program called "Son Rise," a methodology to support children with autism.

She brought together family, friends, and volunteers to help Sarah learn, speak, and connect with others. It was hard but ultimately successful. Sarah continues to rise--and thrive. Briggs documents this experience in her new book Watching Sarah Rise: A Journey of Thriving with Autism.

On Weds., Sept. 17, "We Hopeful Pilgrims'" Jennifer Szweda Jordan will interview Briggs at Fig Tree Coffee shop in Crafton, west of Pittsburgh. Doors open at 6 pm. The interview will begin at 6:30.

"There are no guarantees, but there is an abundance of hope that hard situations can become easier," Briggs wrote. "Maybe our experience will bring hope or help to others."

The evening is not just for family members of children with autism. As one reviewer said, "The ideas in this book are not just for parenting, but for life."

Also featuring:

  • Mary Ellen Begley, one of Sarah's teachers in the St. Anthony School Program that offers inclusive education.
  • Fig Tree Coffee's owner, sharing the story of their mission-driven business.
