About Redlining

Redlining refers to discriminatory lending practices that denied even qualified individuals from taking out loans based on where they live. Historically, mortgage lenders weaponized this strategy to determine what loans to grant based on “detrimental influences,” which emphasized racist criteria like “infiltration of Negroes” and “mixed races" that would devalue a neighborhood.

Discover how community wealth building initiatives in Baltimore are a compelling example of addressing historical inequities through concrete action.
