Understanding the Foundation of Self Care: Following the Nervous System
Overview
Description:
Stress and trauma change the nervous system and affect our health, well-being, and relationships. In this workshop we will explore the "why" of self-care as we learn how the nervous system functions as a result of stress and how self-care can help build resilience and promote health and well-being. Participants will explore the "what" to do by learning to map their nervous system through the day and how to match self-care practices to the needs of the nervous system. Self-care is not a prescribed set of practices, but a way of meeting the daily needs of our body, mind, and soul to promote strength, resilience, and health. The information will help you know your body better, understand the messages it shares, and can be applied to personal self-care, guiding clients in self-care, or with students. In this workshop you will learn to understand your nervous system and what it needs through the technique of mapping your nervous system.
Objectives:
As a result of this course, participants will be prepared to:
1. Describe the effect of stress or trauma on the nervous system.
2. Map their own nervous system with course handouts and identify activities that support self-care to their nervous system and match their personal map.
3. Explain and use this process with clients.
