Event description

NOTE: This class will take place in two parts, on October 31st and November 1st, with both sessions starting at 9 a.m. Eastern. I'm trying to get Eventbrite to understand this. Eventbrite only knows about the first day, but buying a ticket gives you access to BOTH days.

Git is amazingly powerful, and amazingly useful. It's also amazingly hard for people to understand; the learning curve is legendary -- and by that, I don't mean "good." In this two-day course, I'll introduce you to the theory and practice of Git. You'll understand commits, branches, and merging, as well as such topics as cloning, pushing, and pulling.

No background in Git is assumed, and experience with another version-control system might actually make things harder! But I'll take any and all questions you have.

Specifically, we'll discuss:

  • What Git is (and isn't)
  • Repositories
  • Staging vs. commits
  • HEAD
  • Git objects
  • Branching
  • Basic merging
  • Handling conflicts
  • Why branch? Why merge? Branching practices
  • Remote repositories
  • cloning
  • pulling
  • pushing

If you have never used Git before, or if you have been using it at work and don't understand what's going on, then you're the perfect person for this course. I've taught this course to hundreds of people who have been using Git via a "cheat sheet" provided by their manager, which worked fine until things broke down, and they had to consult an expert. After taking this course, you'll be the expert to whom people turn when they have problems!
