Course outline:

How did we get here: A synopsis of the cultural events and societal changes that have created increased mental health issues in those born between 1997 and 2012.

What are we seeing: An in depth look at what mental health issues are prevalent in Gen Z: Specifically looking at increased anxiety, excessive tech use, isolation and social anxiety, increased depression, leaving the home later (failure to launch), increased rates of suicide, and excessive cannabis use.

How does this impact culture: Look at the broader cultural impact of these mental health issues. What does this mean for the future?

What do we do about it?: Recommendations from experts on how we address these issues in young people.

Learning objectives:

Objective 1: Participants will learn 3 factors that have increased mental health concerns in individuals born between 1997 and 2021.

Objective 2: Participants with engage in one activity that helps them reflect on their understanding of adolescent and young adult clients

Objective 3: Participants will leave with 3 potential action steps to address mental health issues in Gen Z clients

Detailed description: This workshop will seek to answer the question: Why is it that so many adolescents and young adults appear to be anxious and depressed? Generation Z was born into a rapidly changing and evolving world. From the invention of social media and the iPhone to a global financial crisis they have experienced a lot of change in their lives. This workshop is for anyone working in mental health who wants to understand their young clients in a more meaningful way. We will explore the most current research on what mental health issues appear to be increasing in young people. We will also address the question: Where do we go from here?

Instructor:

Jess Beck, LCSW

Jess comes to Launch Centers with over a decade of experience in mental health and addiction treatment with both adolescents and adults. As the former Acting Director of the Addictive Behaviors Clinic at the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Medical Center, she developed expertise in the field of evidenced-based addiction treatment. During her tenure at the VA medical center, Jess trained colleagues on therapeutic practices and provided treatment to hundreds of at-risk veterans.

After the VA, Jess served as the Clinical Director of an adolescent dual diagnosis treatment center and an adult addiction treatment center where she led the development of the organization’s clinical programming and supervised a growing interdisciplinary team. Jess also has extensive experience in the treatment of depression, anxiety, and trauma that she gained in previous roles with medical facilities, community-based outpatient programs, and residential treatment centers.

Jess’ therapeutic approach is holistic and strength-based in nature. She is passionate about helping her clients identify their personal values, strengthen their resiliency, and find their unique identity and voice in order to guide them toward acceptance and change in their lives.

Certificates will be awarded at the completion of the 1 hour CE course and a completed CE evaluation form turned into staff.

The course meets the qualifications for 1 hour of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
