About this event

  • Event lasts 1 hour 30 minutes

Join our Lexington/ Winchester, MA Hub for an essential discussion on the recent amendments to Massachusetts' domestic violence laws, specifically focusing on how these changes impact individuals going through a divorce. Equip yourself with the knowledge necessary to navigate the challenges of divorce and domestic violence under the newly amended laws, supported by a team of professionals.

On September 18, 2024, Massachusetts took a significant step forward by expanding its definition of "abuse" under Chapter 209A restraining orders to include coercive control. This legislative change acknowledges a broader range of abusive behaviors, such as financial control, isolation from support networks, and psychological intimidation, which are particularly pertinent in the context of divorce. The law now offers a more inclusive approach to protection, recognizing the complexities of psychological abuse, which may not involve physical harm but can profoundly impact one's autonomy and safety.

During this seminar, participants will gain insights into:

  • The expanded definition of abuse focuses on what constitutes coercive control
  • These changes have specific implications for divorce proceedings, including survivors seeking protection and defendants facing allegations
  • Challenges in the judicial process, particularly in distinguishing between genuine and unfounded claims of coercive control
  • The influence of these legal modifications on custody determinations and broader family law issues

Our panel of legal experts and family law practitioners will discuss the application of the law in court and offer practical guidance for those navigating the divorce process under this new legal framework. Moreover, the importance of having a support system consisting of a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst (CDFA), divorce coach, therapist, and other divorce professionals will be emphasized. These experts are critical in ensuring you are financially, emotionally, and legally supported throughout the divorce process.

This event promises to provide crucial knowledge and resources for understanding and adapting to the new legal standards of coercive control, ensuring that you are well-prepared and informed during divorce proceedings. Learn how to effectively utilize a comprehensive support network to navigate these significant changes in Massachusetts law.
