Understanding Autism through Lived Experience

With support from PAACT (Parents and Autistic Children Together) and the Lincolnshire Autistic Society (LAS), this workshop brings autistic-led insight and meaningful learning to the heart of Boston.

A big thank you to Rob Whiley, Community Connector at Centenary Church, for inviting us to deliver this session and for kindly providing the space to host a lived experience-based workshop within the neurodivergent world at the Centenary Church.

This is a compassionate and interactive peer lead group workshop that combines:

  • Personal insight
  • Current research
  • Practical strategies for support

Rooted in autistic-led perspectives, it offers:

  • Flexible activity choices
  • Real-world discussion
  • Inclusive and accessible learning

Participants will have the opportunity to explore:

  • Sensory needs
  • Workplace and education barriers
  • Language and representation
  • Co-occurring conditions
  • Identity-first understanding

The aim is to empower empathy, deepen awareness, and inspire supportive action in everyday life.

What are the choices within the 5 activities or discussions

There is an activity choice that focuses on - Discussion 1: Lived Experience Matters! - Discussion 2: Sensory & Processing Differences. - Discussion 3: Autism in work and Education. - Activity 1: What does autism mean to you? or - Activity 2: Scenario Simulation. this is a choice from the group.

What makes this workshop unique?

Unlike traditional autism workshops, this session emphasizes: Insights from autistic-led perspectives. Flexible activity choices tailored to participant interests. Real-world discussions and practical applications. A focus on inclusion and neurodivergent-affirming support.

Is the Venue accessible?

Yes. Centenary Methodist Church offers: - Step-free access and accessible restrooms - Quiet spaces for sensory breaks - Adjustable lighting and seating arrangements - Availability of sensory tools upon request

Will there be sensory Accomodations?

Absolutely. We try to provide what we can based around the venue locations, but can not always promise to meet requirements: - Noise-reducing headphones and fidget tools. - A designated quiet room for breaks. - Clear signage & visual schedules. - Information on potential sensory stimuli in advance.

Will I receive a certificate of attendance?

Yes. If you would like an attendance completion certificate, please leave your contact email after the workshop, and we will issue one to you.

Are refreshments provided?

Light refreshments, including tea, coffee, and snacks, will be made available. Please inform us of any dietary requirements in advance.

Can I bring a support person?
