This 4-hour course will explore contemporary understandings of autism from a psychodynamic, developmental, and neurodiversity-affirming perspective. The focus will be on the lived experiences of autistic adults, especially those who are high-masking and/or who were not diagnosed earlier in life.
Topics covered will include:
- The social model of disability and the neurodiversity framework
- The sensory and neurocognitive underpinnings of autism
- Common autistic traits and experiences
- Diverse autistic presentations and underdiagnosed groups
- The impact of masking, discrimination, and minority stress
- Interactions between neurotype and personality/defenses
- Resources for autistic clients
