Overview
Trainers: Boston Children’s Hospital Neighborhood Partnerships team: Molly Jordan, Shella Dennery and Kate Tetuan
Decsription: Anxiety is one of the most prevalent behavioral health challenges for children and adolescents today with 32% of youth ages 13-28 experiencing an anxiety disorder (NIH). In Part 1 of this workshop, the focus will be on sharing information about anxiety and identifying proactive strategies that can help to create supportive environments for young people experiencing it. This workshop will be focused on engaging in interactive activities focused on enhancing program routines and structures to help reduce stress inducing situations along with ideas for sharing information about anxiety with all staff.
In Part 2 of this workshop, we will expand on information relating to how anxiety may present in youth and discuss responsive strategies to support young people in the moment. This will include strategies for having conversations with youth about anxiety as well as offer a framework to examine the relationship between anxiety and school/program avoidance. Practical strategies for supporting youth will be shared including a discussion on connecting with family and community supports for additional resources.
