17 NIGHTS (register for all nights)

June 19th - July 5th (17 Days)

Why July 5?

July 5 was a day historically used by free Black communities to celebrate American Independence as a statement of protest and hope before the Civil War. Fredrick Douglass's speech 'What to the Slave is thr Fourth of July' was given at a LYCEUM on JULY 5TH!

What Happens on Each of the 17 Days?

  • Each evening at 8:17 PM in Zoom (Online) , a reader will read an excerpt from a formerly enslaved person's writings. After the reading, a host will guide a brief conversation on that day’s highlighted freedom and its relevance today.
