Event description

Description

Come join the Bug Club as we adventure outdoors on insect collecting trips in various habitats, demonstrate how to trap and curate insects, and meet scientists who spend their career learning about the insects that impact our lives. This camp comes complete with a set of insect collecting equipment and by the end of camp, you will have the start to a nice insect collection. Campers will collect data, make observations and communicate the information to others. Insect collections may be used for 4-H Insect Collection competitions.

  • The camp will be held in room 2216 of Steinmetz Hall from 8:30-4:00

(Drop off as early as 8:00 and pick up as late as 4:30)

  • (When you enter the Entomology Building lobby, take a left and the first hallway to the right. A camp leader will be in the lobby from 8:00-8:30 to greet campers.)

  • Limit: 30 students 5th through 10th grade (Older campers may apply as peer leaders.)

  • Fee: $175 (fee includes T-shirt, insect collecting equipment, snacks, field trips and transportation).

  • Participants will be required to bring their own lunch.

Activities:
Students will learn how to collect insects in both terrestrial and aquatic habitats, they will take part in a Linnaean Game to test their knowledge of insects, they will complete an insect collection they get to keep, they will build a bug out of candy, learn to cook with insects, meet a scientist, dissect an insect, learn about insect communication by competing in a pheromone trail activity, compete in an insect mouthparts relay, play the insect game of life, work a live bee colony, and visit the Butterfly Rainforest. Not bad for a bug camp. Please register today to reserve your seat.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
After we receive the camp payment, the University of Florida will now require families to register their camper through a two part system. You will receive an email that includes an information form, contract and release of liabiality form. You will receive a confirmation email when your packet is approved. The email will contain instructions on how to complete your camp registration online through 4-H Online. Since we are a camp, you will indicate as a "State Office" instead as part of a county program. The website for continuing your registration is https://florida.4honline.com, but you will be unable to complete registration until after you have received a message stating that your camper has been accepted and is active in the system.
