Event description

Description

This OHNY Weekend, Open House New York invites you to a special afternoon of talks and performances to celebrate the opening of the TWA Hotel.

When it opened in 1962, Eero Saarinen’s TWA Flight Center became an immediate international sensation and for decades epitomized the glamour and excitement of the Jet Age. Closed in 2001 when TWA Airlines ceased operations, the building sat vacant and unused for years (except for the one day a year the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey opened it for OHNY Weekend), until 2015 when MCR and Morse Development won the contract to transform the building into a hotel. Today, Saarinen’s icon is restored and serves as the centerpiece for a new 512-room hotel and conference center, with restaurants, bars, shops, and other amenities.

Join us to hear the behind-the-scenes stories of how an army of designers, engineers, contractors, electricians, and others brought this iconic building back to life.

SPECIAL: The afternoon will also include performances of four new musical compositions inspired by the TWA Flight Center, commissioned by Open House New York and Access Contemporary Music to celebrate the building’s reopening. This will be the only time these four pieces will ever be performed together in public.
