Coastal Nippers is a dynamic and interactive programme for children delivered by Surf Lifeguards which provides surf safety and beach awareness.

Venue: Matapōuri Beach, Tūtūkākā Coast

When: Tuesday 13 January - Friday 16 January, 2026

4x Two Hour Sessions Tuesday through to Friday

Cost: $80 per child (This is a subsidised cost)

Time: 09:30am - 11:30am

For ages 5-7 years old



Terms & Conditions – Coastal Nippers Programme


Programme/session times

Coastal Nippers is a five session programme delivered from Monday to Friday with each session being two hours long. There are generally two sessions per day, with one morning and one afternoon time slot. Children may be allocated to these sessions according to age group and/or water competence. The daily session times are between 9am and 3pm and may be adjusted to suit the tides/ weather.


Health & Safety

Surf Life Saving New Zealand understands the risks associated with the coast and is committed to providing the best possible Health and Safety environment for Beach Ed. All instructors are qualified and experienced lifeguards who have completed in house training. Each session will have a Operational Risk Analysis form completed - identifying, assessing and managing the variable conditions on the day.

• Health & Safety is our responsibility under the Healthy and Safety at Work Act 2015;

• SLSNZ will provide a minimum of one instructor to ten participants.

• The parent/ caregivers will ensure there is adequate personal protective gear for each student, including but not limited to: hats, sunscreen, warm clothes and appropriate swimwear (bring a wetsuit for you child if they get cold easily)

• SLSNZ must receive informed parental consent for each child participating in the programme and any relevant medical/ behavioral conditions must be disclosed.

• It is the responsibility of parent/ caregivers to provide food and water for the participant.

• The parent/ care giver must stay onsite during the session and is encouraged to participant in the water activities if their child has low water confidence/ ability.

• The Senior Instructor will have final say in determining whether the participants will be able to enter the water.

Photos/Video

Surf Lifesaving New Zealand may use photos or videos taken during the programme for the purpose of promotion. This includes promotional materials in both print and electronic media, such as websites and social media. Photos may be edited or formatted and published for print or online. Video footage may be edited and published online.


Payment

Payment for the Coastal Nippers programmes will be made through the EventBrite platform via credit card. Payment for the entire programme must be made in full at the time of booking.


Cancellations

Due to missed opportunities for other participants we have a strict cancellation policy. If your booking is cancelled within 3 weeks of your booking date 50% of the total bill will be refunded. If your booking is cancelled within 48 hours of the programme start date or the participant does not show on the day, you will be charged the total amount. If you cancel more than 3 weeks before from the first day of the programme you will be refunded.


Natural Disasters/ Adverse weather

Coastal Nippers sessions will go ahead as planned unless civil defense implements a tsunami or coastal warning. In the event of a tsunami or coastal warning from civil defense on the day, the day will be cancelled, and you will be reimbursed. Parents and caregivers are responsible for having transport available for immediate tsunami evacuation.


Bad weather conditions/ poor water quality

Due to the nature of the Coastal Nippers programme adverse weather may cause the programme to be adjusted and or cancelled at short notice. A refund of the days within the week that are affected will be given due to cancellation because of adverse weather. However, if according to Safeswim, the water quality is unsafe for swimming, alternative land-based activities will be delivered. No refund will be given if the water quality is poor and the participants cannot enter the water.


Minimum booking numbers

Each Coastal Nippers programme requires a minimum number of participants. If such number is not met, SLSNZ has the right to withdraw the programme. A full refund will be given to those participants who were booked on the withdrawn course.
