About this event
The Philosophical Research Society is proud to welcome certified Deep Listening® facilitator Abby Dahlquist for a presentation on the art and philosophy of composer, performer and humanitarian Pauline Oliveros. In her lecture, Dahlquist will explore Oliveros' belief in the power of stillness and attuned listening to nurture connection, build community, and heal society.
Following her presentation, Dahlqwuist will lead DEEP LISTENING workshop, guiding us through Oliveros' transformative practice and teaching us how to bring our awareness to the natural music of the world around us.
This event is part of our Alchemy of Sound lecture series
Deep Listening explores the difference between the involuntary nature of hearing and the conscious nature of listening. Oliveros developed a practice which includes bodywork, sonic meditations, and interactive performance, as well as listening to the sounds of daily life, nature, one’s own thoughts, imagination, and dreams. It cultivates a heightened awareness of the sonic environment, both external and internal, and promotes experimentation, improvisation, collaboration, playfulness, and other creative skills vital to personal and community growth.
Inherently collaborative, the first published Deep Listening scores and activities (Sonic Meditations, 1971) were workshopped in the context of a female-identified collective, the fem-ensemble, over a period of many months. From the 1980s onwards, Deep Listening workshops, retreats, and the Deep Listening Certification Program were developed and facilitated in close partnership with playwright IONE (also Oliveros’ life partner) and movement artist Heloise Gold. Today, the philosophy and practice of Deep Listening continues to evolve through a growing international community of listeners.
This 2 hour workshop – led by Certified Deep Listening facilitator Abby Dahlquist invites participants to explore Oliveros’ Deep Listening® practice in community. Participants will be guided through a series of exercises that involve meditation, movement, sounding, improvising, and dreaming to explore the sonic environment, both internal and external. This practice is offered as a gateway to creative fields in the space/time continuum.
Abby Dahlquist is a Certified Deep Listening facilitator through the Center for Deep Listening at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, NY.
