Learn about the trees of the Silverlake Reservoir!

Join Stephanie Carrie (from the popular Instagram account @TreesOfLA) on a walking tour around the Silverlake Reservoir Meadow and surrounding areas. This 1.5 hour interactive class offers deep dive into the arboreal history of Los Angeles via the diverse array of native and non native specific species around the reservoir. This tour is a sensorial exploration of botany basics, tree identification and the history of the LA urban forest - one of the most diverse urban forests in the world! We'll also discuss the 2020 Master Plan, which calls for planting 500 new trees, and restoring more native plants and habitat areas. 10% of proceeds will go to support the Conservancy's work restoring this open green space.

Hollyleaf Cherry (aka Prunus ilicifolia) is native to much of California, including Silver Lake. This lovely evergreen tree, blooming in Springtime above, grows edible fruit in the summer too, though more bitter and with a bigger pit than its domesticated cousins. It makes a lovely hedge and is also a great small shade or patio tree. It's leaves and pollen also support local caterpillars and butterflies, including beautiful Swallowtails.
