Overview

Tree-Ring Talk seminar on Wednesday, January 21 at Noon, MST with artist Caroline Landau and ecologist Dr. Madison Sankovitz

Join us Wednesday, January 21 2026 at Noon for a special Tree-Ring ART Talk by artist Caroline Landau and ecologist Dr. Madison Sankovitz present on the newest LTRR exhibit "Prometheus", in Bannister 110 and via Zoom.

Abstract:

In 2023, Caroline Landau and Dr. Madison Sankovitz traveled to Nevada to locate the remnants of Prometheus, a bristlecone pine tree. Until its felling in 1964, it was the oldest known living organism on Earth at over 5,000 years old. Using 3D scanning and mold-making techniques, Landau captured the textures of the tree’s remnants—a cutting left untouched for decades—and recreated it in glass. This glass piece preserves Prometheus in its current state. It critiques the human impulse to dominate and dissect nature, reminding us of the irreversible loss of something far older than ourselves.

GeoSynchrony is a multidisciplinary collective dedicated to preserving and amplifying the stories of Earth's ephemeral natural archives. By merging art, science, and storytelling, we capture the impressions of natural records of time such as trees and ice. Through moldmaking and glass, we transform these fleeting imprints into permanent artifacts, advocating for their protection while leaving a legacy of knowledge and beauty for generations to come.
