Tree Care in the time of CRB: Practical Strategies to protect your palms

By Lyon Arboretum Education Department

Overview

Learn how to protect your palms from the Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle with practical, research-based strategies you can use right now.

Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (CRB) continues to pose a serious threat to Hawaiʻi’s trees, particularly Coconut trees, but is also a threat to our beloved native loulu palms. While long-term solutions are still in development, there are important steps we can take right now to help trees survive and stay resilient.

This community discussion will share the latest updates on CRB, practical tree-care strategies, and realistic actions homeowners, land managers, and community members can take to reduce damage and stress on vulnerable palms.

The class will be led by Brown Cannon, a seasoned agriculturalist who has been actively researching and applying on-the-ground strategies to mitigate the impacts of CRB across the islands.

This class is ideal for anyone who cares for palms or trees, whether in home landscapes, community spaces, or conservation settings, and wants to be informed, prepared, and proactive.
