This presentation explores the complex, underrecognized intersection between
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and eating disorders (EDs),
highlighting how shared neurobiological, behavioral, and psychosocial mechanisms
influence disordered eating behaviors and treatment outcomes. Participants will
examine how factors such as dopamine dysregulation, emotional impulsivity, executive
dysfunction, cognitive rigidity, and disrupted interoception contribute to food-related
challenges across diagnoses. The session will outline the key barriers to adequate
nutrition in individuals with co-occurring ADHD and EDs—such as stimulant-induced
appetite suppression, time blindness, rigid food routines, binge-restrict cycles, and
sensory-based avoidance. Emphasis is placed on practical, compassionate interventions
that scaffold executive functioning, support food flexibility, and reduce shame around
eating. Psychoeducation, behavioral interventions, pharmacologic interventions and
considerations of environmental influences will also be discussed in order to support
addressing both conditions concurrently.
3 learning objectives:
• Define the shared characteristics and overlapping symptoms of ADHD and
eating disorders.
• Discuss the consequences on assessment and treatment when dealing with dual
diagnosis of ADHD and eating disorders.
• Describe comprehensive treatment approaches that simultaneously address
ADHD and eating disorders.
