Treating Behaviors Related to Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder
Overview
The session will focus on feeding strategies to use in the school setting to assist children in learning to tolerate new foods, reduce anxiety surrounding trying new foods, and increasing attempts to taste new foods. Challenges with making improvements in the school setting will be reviewed, as well as ways to provide assistance to parents. All information will be based on children with primary focus on Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder.
Time Ordered Agenda:
5:30 pm - 6 pm: Review definitions and diagnoses of Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake disorder and Pediatric Feeding Disorder
6 pm- 6:30 pm - Review Behavioral Domains of ARFID and match them to appropriate interventions you can use in school
6:30 - 7 pm - Discuss challenges with implementing in the school setting, including generalization, and parent buy-in/participation.
7 pm- 7:15 - Summary of topics reviewed
7:15-7:30 - Discussion/Questions
Upon course completion:
Participants will be able to...
1. Recognize the difference between Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) and Pediatric Feeding Disorder (PFD.
2. Distinguish between different feeding strategies by identifying functions of feeding difficulties based on ARFID behavioral domains.
3. Manage introduction of new foods within the context of school menus and challenging behaviors.
Speaker Biography:
Dr. Kimberly Brown-Lupia has been a pediatric psychologist working in the field of feeding disorders for over 30 years. She has worked in multiple settings, including inpatient, outpatient, homes, and schools. She enjoys working with all different disciplines involved in feeding to provide the most comprehensive care possible. Kim uses a variety of interventions to improve mealtimes for both the child and the family. These include, behavior management, sensory desensitization, cognitive behavioral therapy, and parent education. She focuses on child autonomy while supporting them in progressing feeding skills that may be difficult for them.
