Training for Courage with Ali Michael
Overview
Courage doesn’t just happen because we want it or we need it. We have to train for it. This interactive and experiential workshop leverages tools from social psychology to empower participants to take courageous actions. It acknowledges the challenges of operating in a highly polarized environment, where supporting colleagues and students can feel risky: "What if I use the wrong words? What if I say something hurtful?" Often, our fear stems not from oppression itself, but from feeling unprepared to be an effective member of a diverse community. This workshop aims to build the courage needed to take action and foster relationships across differences, even in the face of fear.
• Grounding strategies for managing fight, flight, and freeze reactions
• Techniques for navigating the tricky terrain of receiving feedback
• Writing a worst-case scenario script to overcome paralysis-inducing fear
• Designing a stereotype threat antidote to enhance empathy and connection
• Strategies for calming our nervous systems in a panic-inducing news environment
These 3 sessions will be on Zoom on Thursday evenings from 7p-8p EST
