Are you interested in building your skills to lead conversations about race, systemic racism, and racial equity in your organization? Join Equity Matters in our inaugural open enrollment workshop. Learn about racial equity facilitation skills and more importantly practice with a community of learners. Whether you lead conversations formally or just want to build your skills to talk more explicitly about race, this workshop can benefit you. Walk away with facilitation prompts and discussion question ideas that you can use immediately in your organization. We promise a highly interactive and engaging experience with opportunities to practice real time facilitation and receive valuable feedback to support continued growth.

The content of these sessions covers racial equity facilitation skills. The first day covers individual change theory with a racial equity lens, active listening while considering racialized power dynamics, and strategies to address potential resistance to talking about race and systemic racism. On day two, participants practice facilitating discussions and giving and receiving feedback. Please note that this session does not cover foundational racial equity content building.

In the spirit of practicing our own racial equity values, this workshop is designed to be centered on people of color. We are actively recruiting people of color to sign up for this workshop. Important Considerations – Participants Must:

Be available for both workshop days, September 7th and September 14th.
Have a solid foundational understanding of race as a social construction, systemic racism, and racial equity. This workshop focuses solely on racial equity facilitation skills (not foundational understanding).
Commit to centering the experiences and skill building of people of color.

Participants will...

Session 1:

Assess personal strength and grow areas of racial equity facilitation skills
Build a common understanding of individual change theory focused on racial equity
Practice anticipating and addressing potential resistance

Session 2:

Practice racial equity facilitation skills (mock facilitation)
Practice giving and receiving race conscious feedback

ACCESSIBILITY:

The Centilia Center at El Centro is ADA accessible and is located approximately a half-block away from the Beacon Hill Light Rail station, and is accessible via bus routes 36, 60, and 107. Limited street parking is available in the surrounding area; transit/carpooling encouraged. If you do drive, please avoid blocking residential driveways or mailboxes. As a reminder, El Centro is an old building, and the elevator is sometimes out of service. Please let us know if you need to be notified if the elevator is unavailable.

We are committed to making our workshops cost accessible and have a limited number of partial scholarships for participants where cost is a barrier.

**** Scholarship requests must be received by Monday 08/20/18. Please include in your request the amount of scholarship you are requesting and how you and your organization align with our racial equity priorities. (See priorities below).

**** Scholarships will be distributed no later than Monday 08/27/18, and will require each participant to pay a minimum of $100.00 towards the training.

Racial Equity Priorities:

Scholarships will be prioritized for the following participants: (Leaders of color under 25, Indigenous people/organizations, and organizations that are POC-led AND Community of Color embedded).

*Embedded is defined as communities of color most impacted by the disparity you are working to undo have decision making power and those most impacted have a mechanism to hold the organization accountable, leadership and board seats are connected to the community, and racial justice is a part of the fabric of the organization.
