Trail Academy: Help Build the Gaviota Overlook Trail!
Overview
Do you love trails? We’re excited to announce that in January, we’re breaking ground to expand the existing trail network at Arroyo Hondo Preserve! Get in on the action and help us build the Gaviota Overlook trail by joining our volunteer trail crew!
On January 17th, 2026, we invite you to join us for a FREE sustainable trail design and building training in partnership with SAGE Trail Alliance. Volunteers will learn the fundamentals of trail building and spend the afternoon completing the new 1.1-mile trail at Gaviota Overlook!
The training is from 8am-4pm. The first half of the day consists of classroom theory and discussion. After a lunch break, we'll take the second half of the day to put our new skills into practice!
Lunch will be provided by the Land Trust.
Some of the Trail Maintenance and Construction techniques we will cover include:
- Trail Evaluation
- Soil Types
- How to maintain and build sustainable trails
- Basics of Trail Construction
- Trail Assessment and Work Prescription
- Safety
- Trail Tread Rules
- Specific Techniques for mitigating/water erosion
Lending a hand in trail maintenance is not only fun and promotes healthy outdoor recreation, but preserves integral pieces of our region's heritage! Come learn invaluable skills and how to contribute to the maintenance of your favorite local trails. In addition to creating the new trail at Gaviota Overlook, we’ll also do some maintenance on a portion of the West Ridge Trail to enhance your hiking experience at the preserve. This expanded trail network will enable the public to explore a brand-new section of the Gaviota coast!
Space is limited - please reserve your spot ASAP!
