Event description

Description

Emma Acker (Brown class of '00), the Associate Curator of American Art at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, will lead a tour of the exhibition Cult of the Machine: Precisionism and American Art, which runs from March 24-August 12 at the de Young Museum before it travels on to the Dallas Museum of Art. The exhibition seeks to frame the emergence of the American Precisionist artistic style, which flourished during the 1920s and 1930s—and reconciled realism with abstraction, and wed European art movements, such as Purism, Cubism, and Futurism, to American subjects ranging from the urban and the industrial to the rural.

The tensions and ambivalences about industrialization expressed in works by the Precisionists are particularly fascinating and relevant to a contemporary audience in the midst of what has been termed a Fourth Industrial Revolution, and the exhibition includes a number of
contemporary, technologically-minded objects and interactives to help frame a comparison between Precisionism and our own time.

Optional Tea with Emma Afterwards to Discuss the Exhibit!
