Touch of RED by TRIBE

The RED Series continues Shamel Pitts’ research to propose and share the colorfulness within Blackness. Pitts has met a multitude of performers from various countries of the African diaspora, widening his understanding of the diversity of Black people and forming the realization that we find home through a shared platform. Through the RED Series, Pitts is creating a body of work that supports, shelters and cultivates an Afro-futuristic performance art landscape in which the multitude of our diversity and capacity is realized, allowed, nurtured and shared.

Part of the Red Series, “Touch of RED” is a new male duet that takes place in a contemporary ring. Its research deals with the allowance of Black men to soften; the power in vulnerability; and the meeting point of two individuals within a boxed space that references a futuristic and voyeuristic gladiator entertainment site in which a heat path between the two performers builds not out of aggression or combat, but with an enhanced, electrifying effeminacy that heals.

ABOUT TRIBE

Multidisciplinary Visual Performances is a Brooklyn-based Afrofuturistic arts collective dedicated to creating, producing, and sharing original multidisciplinary global art projects founded in December 2019 by choreographer and performer Shamel Pitts.

Understanding that performance art and live art are practices of human connection, TRIBE acts nationally and internationally by developing art exchanges in collaboration with institutions and artists, with a focus on the African diaspora.

TRIBE’s mission is to seize space and create a platform for artists – most specifically artists of color – with huge inspiration from the Afrofuturism movement. This movement states that we have a responsibility through our work to tell new stories and create a brighter future that is different, and shines more luminously, from its past.

Ultimately, TRIBE aims to bring its audience and community into experiences that humanize Black and Brown bodies and share the colorfulness within Blackness that allows us to be multiplicitous.

“Touch of RED” is a National Performance Network (NPN) Creation & Development Fund Project co-commissioned by Miami Light Project INC, Jacob’s Pillow, YoungArts, UCLA’s Center for the Art of Performance, New York Live Arts INC, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and NPN. The Creation & Development Fund is supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, Office of Cultural Affairs, and the National Endowment for the Arts (a federal agency). The piece has also been supported by the Consulate General of Israel in New York, Trust for Mutual Understanding, GIBNEY, and The Harkness Foundation for Dance. Still and video photography is NOT allowed. We recommend that you enjoy living in the moment—witness the art as it unfolds—not through your camera screen!

Absolutely—but buy tickets in advance! Purchase your tickets online because we cannot guarantee that tickets will be available at the door!

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No, you do not have to print your ticket just have your ID with you at Will Call.

What is the refund policy?

No refunds. Late seating is at the discretion of management.
