About this event
Started in 2017, Together We Dine (TWD) provides an opportunity for people to have conversations about a variety of meaningful and sometimes uncomfortable topics in a safe and non-threatening environment. We don't have conversations like these everyday, but Together We Dine helps to set the table and create space for all.
We are pleased to partner with the Latino Arts Project to offer a community conversation on the running exhibition "The Gullah Journey: West Africa to Mexico" as part of our joint on-going effort to educate our communities, foster empathy among each other, and inspire dialogue about our roots and history.
This free exhibition brings awareness to the West Africans who were enslaved and brought to plantations in Georgia and the Carolinas because of their prized agricultural skills with rice cultivation. This exhibition brings the Atlantic Slave Trade into vivid perspective through a wide range of art forms and shares the stories of The Gullah.
Participants will tour the gallery and view the amazing commissioned works of art by both local and international artists that portray the magnitude of the forced migration of 12 million Africans to the Americas—art that fosters empathy and deeper understanding of this global tragedy. Don't miss this extraordinary opportunity to witness the journey of a people who despite unimaginable hardship preserved their dignity, traditions and faith. Experience how music and art continue connect the past to the present and inspire generations to come.
Following the gallery tour, Project Unity facilitators will lead interactive small group discussions about the stories told through the artists. Please note that the conversations are intended to inspire and educate.
Join us for this cultural and eye-opening experience!
