About this event
Speaking and Story Coach extraordinaire...
Karen Duffin has been helping people tell stories for 25 years. First, as an executive speechwriter, helping the powerful shape and sell the narratives that run the world – then deconstructing those same narratives as a reporter at NPR and This American Life. And she's taught countless people how to tell their own stories, as a professor and a Moth story coach.
In her own words, "What I’ve learned is this: the stories we tell and the stories we’re told, these become the rules that govern our lives. Individually and collectively.
The problem is, most of us aren’t even aware of them; it’s hard to see the water when you’re swimming in it. But stories have consequences – they convince us to pursue our dreams or confine us to a small life; elect corrupt leaders or resist them; say the hard thing or stay trapped.
But here’s the good news: stories have component parts, almost like Legos. Which means, you can deconstruct them – and, most importantly, reconstruct them. "
Friday night will be interactive (if you choose; you are also perfectly welcome to just listen). Using real examples from 25 years of stories, Karen helps us start to see the often hidden scaffolding of stories. She'll show us how subjective they are; how the exact same set of facts can create very different meanings. And how easy it is to shift that meaning (for better or worse).
She'll also invite us to go in search of our stories, the ones that rule our lives. To get curious about them. To identify their component parts. To question them. And learn how to write new ones, better ones.
Join us for an evening of seeing our stories, understanding the rules they create in our lives, and then learning the art and skill of taking them apart to rebuild them into what is more powerful, meaningful, and ultimately freeing for us.
Welcome to our Season 17 ~ ALCHEMY ~ from Lifecycle to Living
This season we offer you a new way to engage--our Friday evenings will have more audience engagement and participation. You will have the opportunity that evening to begin what we will dive into fully the next day, Saturday, in embodied, highly interactive exploration and practice--together! It follows Jung's process of alchemy as the compensation for our intense focus on the rational world. He believed alchemy to be the symbolic mirror of our psychological journey into wholeness and self-realization.
Consider investing in yourself each month, this season. Consider giving yourself an entire immersive transformational experience with like-minded, like-hearted community. Renew your heart and soul. Dive and play with us, as Jung himself did, in the the ether of soul and self. We will be weaving Jung's teachings deeply into our explorations. And we will be alchemizing what is ready in our lives to become "gold."
