At 7 am, amidst the flow of commuter traffic, Artist Chudamani Clowes begins a walk from Galle Road to the entrance of the Colombo Port, adorning a painted structure titled Floating Rice House. Collaged with ethnographic imagery and painted with heat- and light-reactive pigments that echo the shifting colours of coral, the work draws parallels between rice—an essential food staple across South and Southeast Asia—and coral, a fragile organism that migrates across oceans and is increasingly threatened by climate change. In weaving together references to migration, food security, and ecological precarity, the Tilda Journeys to the Port embodies the promise of refuge that remains just out of reach.
