SAVE THE DATE: The Throwback Pride Block Party is happening in Dupont Circle on Wednesday, June 4th! Come celebrate at this 70s-themed block party as we celebrate the 50-year anniversary of Pride in DC on the exact block it all started on.
50 years ago in 1975, LGBT bookstore owner Deacon Maccubbin decided to host the first ever D.C. “Gay Pride Day” outside of his store, Lambda Rising, on 20th Street NW. 2,000 people came and Pride in D.C. has grown ever since. On June 4th, we celebrate its origins by honoring Deacon Maccubbin and celebrating the legacy of Pride in D.C. right where it started, complete with live music, food, and drinks! Deacon will be this block party's Grand Marshall and will be speaking on the steps of the former Lambda Rising store, the same place where he kicked Pride off for the first time 50 years ago!
Local businesses that line 20th Street will be serving up street food and drinks, coupons to retail shops, unique clothes, and even Pride makeovers!
There will be live bands playing fun tracks across the block, as well as a live DJ spinning on-theme 70s music so we can boogie the night away.
Don't miss this amazing crossover of Pride celebration and history as we take it all the way back to 1975. Retro outfits encouraged!
