About this Event

This is a self-supported 3 day, 2-night car camping trip to Three Forks Camp area 30 miles South of Jordan Valley Oregon. This trip is all about celebrating Owyhee Wild & Scenic River Designation in Oregon (October 19, 1984), and go hike around the confluence of the West Little Owyhee River and Antelope Creek.

The purpose of this trip is to explore Outstandingly Remarkable Values that a Wild & Scenic river has to offer from the ecology, fisheries & aquatic species, geologic features, recreational opportunities, scenic beauty, and wildlife.

What to Expect:

Expect weather to be comfortable in the day 60’s to 70’s and freezing temperatures at night. We will be crossing the Owyhee River by foot in knee-deep water so be prepared. The hike could be upwards of five (5) miles round trip. Poison Ivy is near riparian areas

About the Area

Three forks area of the Owyhee region is where the South Fork, Middle Fork, and North fork and combined make the main Owyhee River. Just to the south of here is West Little Owyhee River and Antelope Creek. This area is culturally significant and historically significant.

Trip Timeline

Friday, October 16: Getting There: Meet at Three Forks Campground on Friday night before dark. You will need a vehicle with clearance and possibly a 4-wheel drive. If you need assistance/directions on how to get there we can provide them, and we can meet folks in Jordan Valley if you don’t feel comfortable getting there yourself.

Saturday, October 17: Leave camp by 9:30a and drive to the West Little Owyhee Canyon Overlook. We will hike down to the river and ford the river on foot. From there we will start exploring up West Little Owyhee or Antelope Creek.

Sunday, October 18: Enjoy a short hike to the top of Three Forks Dome then head home by mid-afternoon.

Camp/What to Pack

Here is a suggested gear list for the trip:

  • Shelter (tarp or tent, stakes, ground cloth)
  • Sleeping Pad
  • Sleeping bag
  • Headlamp
  • Extra Water (5 Gal) or water filter
  • Water bottles (2-3 liter)
  • Stove & fuel
  • Cooking pot/utensils/knife
  • Food: 2 breakfast, 2-3 lunch , 2 dinner, snacks/treats
  • Toothbrush/toothpaste
  • Sunscreen/chapstick
  • Baby wipes (so great for cleaning up!)
  • Shoes and Clothing you can get wet
  • Hiking boots/trail shoes
  • Camp shoes (optional)
