Designing Spaces that Build Community

Workshop Descriptor:

'You’re not just designing a space, you’re designing a culture.'

Teachers are designers (Wiggins and McTighe,2005). We design learning experiences, create conditions for success and craft processes that enable intentional outcomes. Designing the spaces where all this happens is a big part of that. Our students spend most of their days in our classrooms and in the digital spaces we nurture. Evaluating, rethinking and creatively redoing these spaces with a designer’s mind and a teacher’s heart can make the difference in student engagement, agency and feeling like they belong.

In this workshop, we will look at effective learning spaces and how they might be designed in ways that go beyond just decoration. We will explore the power of themes and how the trust we build through our physical space traverses the digital spaces we use as well. We will discuss how we can use these spaces to show our own creativity and communicate to our learners just how much we value their space and how much time they spend in it. That they inspire us. That we have their backs. That we are in this together.

Participant's will:

Discuss how our physical learning space is the Third Teacher
Explore a design process to rethink and redo classroom spaces that go beyond decorating walls to designing a culture
Consider how using a theme or a metaphor (the hashtag) to frame your year can create the conditions for the valuable learning you want to enable
Look at how developing the metaphor and unpacking it with learners help them engage authentically with the school's Learning Principles
Discover how using a theme also makes other design decisions (font, color palette, hashtag, etc) easier.
Share stories about the power of rearranging furniture, getting rid of “cool” pieces that don’t help learning at the moment (from blogs to bean bags) and how this design process is iterative, strategic and evolving.
Examine ways the physical space collides with the digital spaces and share examples of how we can design and maximize this collision for learners.
Analyze own context and readiness, and choose which online space to nurture
Walk away with different strategies to design both the physical and online spaces to build voice, identity, relationships, and community.
Leave with a new community; one that can be a collaborative resource to help you design your future spaces

Workshop Leader Bio: Paul Guinto

Paula currently lives in Singapore, where she teaches grades 7 and 8 English at United World College Southeast Asia. Her practice involves conceptual teaching, a lot of reading, a ton of writing, discussion-based learning, and making thinking visible. Right now, she is pretty obsessed with making the TCRWP happen, maximizing the learning from her “resume of failure” (borrowing James Sanders’ term) and designing spaces that build community, exploring the edges where the physical and digital might meet. She is interested in creating spaces for learners to feel safe, supported, trusted, connected, inspired, empowered, and heard. She believes it is important to design spaces intentionally, ones that build agency and a sense of belonging because learning happens when learners feel at home.

Other passions include raising her son, Luca, connected learning, writing, books and bookshelves, drawing book covers, poetry, photography, design, and asking difficult questions. She believes in the power of storytelling, where stories live, how they survive and loves seeing how the 21st century landscape is changing how stories are told. Finally, she believes that what makes people great is also what makes them great teachers. She feels that what we personally hold true and dear and important is what will define our pedagogy. For her, it's hard to separate being a networked individual/human from being a networked educator. The personal bleeds into the professional and she thinks that should be okay.

Paula has presented in Learning 2.0 Asia, Learning 2.0 Europe, and EARCOS. She is also an experienced MYP Language A: English teacher and has been an IB MYP Workshop leader (subject specific workshops, assessment in the 21st century, delivering the programme) since 2008, and an IB visit team member and reader since 2011.

Workshop Registration Fee

Early Bird Fee: US$300.00

Registration fee after the 28 January 2018: US$330.00

Registration fee after the 28 March 2018: US$360.00

Cancellation Policy

Please note that each workshop will proceed based on participant registration. Innovative Global Education will inform you by March 27 2018 if the workshop is to be cancelled. If the workshop is cancelled your full payment will be reimbursed.

Workshop Participation

If Innovative Global Education is informed by March 27 2018, that a participant is unable to attend the workshop, a full refund will be given. If notification of not being able to participate is after March 27 2018, IGE will be unable to refund the registration fee.

If, for any reason, a school needs to either transfer a registered participant to another workshop from the workshop registered or change the name of the participant attending a workshop, Innovative Global Education can make these changes on request from the school or participant.
