Join us October 23 for a virtual event
Join the GIA Alumni Collective, Golden Gate-California Chapter for a virtual event featuring turquoise experts Richard and Helen Shull. With over 30 years of experience, they’ll share their insights on turquoise mining, cutting, treatments, and market trends. Explore new science, technologies, origin studies, and historical research shaping the understanding and value of this unique gem.

Whether you’re a collector, dealer, gemologist, or enthusiast, this event will offer fresh, field-tested understandings about one of the world’s most fascinating gemstones.

About the presenters:
Richard Shull, GIA GG, has spent 30 years as a gemstone miner, cutter, artist, researcher, author, and dealer. His carved gemstones have been featured in lapidary books and many trade publications. Richard was the author of the Gemstone Column for Art Jewelry Magazine from 2009 to 2014. More recently, he wrote the Gemological section in Mike Ryan and Philip Chambless’s turquoise history book, Turquoise in America, Part Two, published in 2020. Richard has worked with a myriad of different gem materials, but the mining and cutting of turquoise and variscite captured his heart from the very beginning.

Helen Shull, with her degrees in business administration and botany, has partnered in finding and working the mines. She is an accomplished lapidary, and her photos have been featured in many trade publications and turquoise books. She manages the Shulls’ gemstone businesses Out of Our Mines – Lapidary and Beadworks and Esmeralda Turquoise Company.
