Understanding the Therapeutic Powers of Play: Utilization and Case Conceptualization
An overview of the Therapeutic Powers of Play mechanisms of change underlying play therapy that cause therapeutic improvement in a client, and how to understand them, use them in treatment planning and in case conceptualization. A didactic and experiential workshop where participants can also share case questions.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Describe what is meant by Therapeutic Powers of Play and its origins and purposes
- Identify at least three categories of therapeutic powers.
- Apply at least one category of the Therapeutic Powers of Play to a current case.

VIRTUAL: This will be a virtual presentation. Participants are asked to be visible (video on) throughout the presentation to facilitate engagement and connection. Participants will be awarded 3 NON-CONTACT CE upon successful completion of a post test.
FAPT is approved by the Association for Play Therapy to offer continuing education specific to Play Therapy. APT Approved Provider 02-115. FAPT maintains responsibility for the program. Registrants understand and agree that any photograph (screenshot), video or audio recording of themselves may be used to further promote FAPT.
FAPT is approved by the Florida Department of Health under FL Statute 491 to offer continuing education for Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists and Mental Health Counselors. Provider Number BAP-50-10520 expires 03/31/2027. FAPT is approved by the Florida Department of Health under FL Statute 490 to offer continuing education for Psychologists. Provider Number BAP-50-10520 expires 05/31/2026.
Cancellation Policy: All cancellations must be requested in writing and received no later than January 5, 2026. Cancellations are subject to a $15 processing fee. Substitutions (someone else attending) or transfer of registration to another training date may be requested.
About our presenter: Athena Drewes, clinical psychologist, certified school psychologist and RPT-S™, lives in Ocala, Florida, with 50 years of clinical and supervisory experience with complex trauma, sexual abuse and foster care. Former APT Board Director, Founder and President Emeritus of New York APT, Leadership Academy graduate, APT and NYAPT Lifetime Achievement Award recipient. A requested lecturer and supervisor around the US and internationally, written 16 play therapy books, including the Therapeutic Powers of Play with Dr. Schaefer.
