‘Of Black & White’ is a deeply personal and visually arresting solo exhibition that explores identity, duality, and belonging through a series of figurative portraits rendered mostly in black and white.
The exhibition pulls from multiple collections, including: ‘Behind The Blinds’, ‘Views Through The Glass Ceiling’, ‘The Weights of Women’, and ‘Caulk & Collage: An Experimental Journey Of Obstinance’. I had no intention of these creatives meshing together, but as I started to curate, I found they all had so many emotions in common.
As a female artist of Black and German descent, I’ve often found the stark contrasts of my experiences reflected in my work, with the emotional and cultural landscape of living between. Each creative acts as a mirror and a map — tracing not only the contours of the figures, but the inherited complexities of race, culture, and mostly womanhood.
Through layered textures, expressive strokes, and abstracted anatomy, I hope the works will invite viewers into a liminal space — one where personal narrative meets collective inquiry.
‘Of Black & White’ is not a search for resolution, but it is a bold declaration of presence. A quiet resistance against being defined by either/or. 'Of Black & White' is my way of saying: I contain both. I contain multitudes. I am Of Black & White.
