The Way of Incense: An Intro to the Kōdō Ceremony Featuring the Rikkoku

The Japanese "Way of Incense" is regarded as one of the three classical arts of refinement alongside the tea ceremony (chadō) and flower arrangement (kadō). This practice invites participants to "listen" to the subtle fragrances of rare aromatic woods, fostering mindfulness, presence, and a deep connection to the ephemeral beauty of scent.

During our time together, participants will receive an interactive presentation of the Kōdō tradition while simultaneously engaging in Monkō (聞香), or "listening to incense." Each participant will experience the nuanced aromas of carefully selected incense woods. Central to this ceremony is the exploration of the Rikkoku (六国) classification—six distinct types of fragrant woods, each originating from different regions and characterized by unique scent profiles:

  • Kyara (伽羅) – Vietnam: Bitter - "The Aristocrat"
  • Rakoku (羅国) – Thailand: Sweet - "The Samurai"
  • Manaka (真那伽) – Malacca, Malaysia: Complex - "The Fickle Lover of Changing Moods"
  • Manaban (真南蛮) – Numerous origins: Salty - "The Coarse Peasant"
  • Sasora (佐曽羅) – India: Hot - "The Monk"
  • Sumotara (寸聞多羅) – Sumatra, Indonesia: Sour - "The Servant Disguised As a Noble”

These classifications, established during the Muromachi period, have been preserved through centuries, offering a structured approach to appreciating the complexities of incense fragrances.

Guided by John Launius, a recognized fragrance expert of over 40 years and Master of Ceremonies (Kōmoto) in the Japanese incense tradition, this session provides a rare opportunity to experience the profound art of Kōdō. Participants will deepen their sensory awareness and gain insight into a cultural practice that harmonizes the senses, spirit, and tradition.
